In Ultima IV the Quest for Avatar, you get to create a character and go around Lord Britishes world on the quest for Avatar. This game was revolutionary during its time in the world of role playing games. It followed Dungeons and Dragons guidelines for rules and used a lot of the same monsters in this game. In this game you first created a character by answering a few questions, and then matched those answers to the characteristics of the type of character such as a magic user or a warrior.

Once you have created a character, you are sent off by Lord British to find the avatar. In order to do this, you must become pure in some of the virtues such as compassion,

honest, etc. Once you feel you have met these criteria you must find the correct shrine and mantra (very important) and go meditate. You are not expected to do this alone as you travel to different villages and can get people to join you on your quest. You must also talk to people to get valuable information. This made the game a real challenge to find the right people with the information you needed. You also would visit towns with shops and buy magic supplies and weapons as well, as armour and food. In order to travel vast distances, you could take the time elevator which would open in special areas, you could take ships but watch out for pirates.
The magic user couldn’t just buy spells, you had to mix them from ingredients that you found or bought, but make sure you get the right amount of the ingredient or the spell won’t work. As in all the Ultima games and in Dungeons and Dragons, you get to fight a wide variety of monsters with special weapons or poisons. Killing them will gain you experience and gold but don’t forget about your mission - the quest for avatar.
This game is made so, you have to rest or camp overnight to give your team time to heal or rest up for bigger battles. You have to treat you team members well and remember their beliefs or they will leave you. This was not just a play this game for and hour and win type of a game. This was a game to sit yourself down, take good notes, as this game will suck you in for hours. This game has decent graphics for its time, nothing like today’s standards but his game is a lot of fun and very challenging. There are times when the game lacks action and can get boring, as you roam from place to place but over all this game is a lot of fun and the fun and adventure outweigh the boredom.
This game is for the true gaming D&D enthusiast. I played it many years ago, and would still play it today. What is really great about this game is that it seems to never end. Just when you finish one quest they come out with another one. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to play a true role playing video game.
