688 Attack Sub was one of the games I played a lot way back when. Its graphics and gameplay were great for the time. However, it's not a difficult simulation to learn. It's a point and click game. Some of the cool aspects are the underwater view (really cool when tracking an oncoming torpedo), the ability to defeat a torpedo with a torpedo (but you have to be good), getting to man a Russian sub and fight U.S. warships from a tanker to an aircraft carrier and battleship, and firing Tomahawk cruise missiles.

There are 10 missions in this game. Each mission has a goal starting from easiest to hardest missions. For instance, one Russian mission is to simply attack and sink
an entire U.S. task force including a 688 attack sub. The Russian sub has the look and feel of a Russian sub. The last and hardest mission is to launch cruise missiles at a land target (from a U.S. 688) then run a gauntlet of Russian warships and subs to make an escape through a real world waterway. However, you don't have to play the missions in sequence. You can choose any mission to play at any time.
This is a simulation and not an arcade game. It takes time to load and reload torpedoes and missiles. And there is good enemy AI. You have to be ready to fire on an enemy sub, but lose contact, if he dives deep. If they don't detect you they can't shoot at you. But when you do shoot, you'd better be prepared to drop an evasion device and take evasive action. The simulation also has the realism of thermal layers in the ocean that refract sonar waves. All good sub commanders use thermal layers to hide under. But beware. If they can't hear you, you can't hear them either. And you may have a contact, but it may be a biologic. Your sonar computer will analyze contacts and identify them for you. It may be a biologic or it may be a torpedo in the water coming at you.
Sound effects are pretty good too. The launching torpedoes and whales singing are realistic. Though, there aren't many sounds in the game. But there aren't supposed to be. Submarines are weapons of stealth remember.
It's simple to operate this game, but it’s very entertaining. It's a simulator I played many times. I definitely recommend it.
