A.T.A.C.: A War on Drugs was developed by Argonaut software and published by Micro Prose in 1992. It is a unique game as it includes classic simulation game play with an added bonus of a strategy game. The game can be played using strategy only—watching as the aircraft take off on the missions that the player plans, or the player can take a hands-on approach and get behind the controls.
The setting of the game is a jungle in the country of Columbia in South America.
You are at the headquarters for the ATAC (Advanced Tactical Air Command), just waiting to take on the drug barons who are pulling in major amounts of money. To accomplish their goal they are busy farming, purifying,
and storing drugs. It is YOUR goal to put these barons out of business by foiling their plans on each level of their operation. You are to destroy the plantations, factories, warehouses, and even the seaports and airports used to ship the drugs.
The player, as the head of the ATAC, has F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighters and AH-64A Apache helicopters to use to wipe out the drug barons and their operations. To help fight the drug barons, the player uses intelligence reports from 150 undercover agents along with other gathered information from reconnaissance flights and spy satellites. This helps the player in choosing what targets to attack, what pilot to assign to what aircraft, and which weapons to use.
Each mission has to be carefully planned using all resources. After the player has the game plan finished, it’s time to put the plan into action. When the player deploys an aircraft it doesn’t need any help from the player to reach its goal? But if desired, the player can become a pilot and can take over the controls of an aircraft and carry out the mission. Or, the player can simply watch from an inside-the-cockpit viewpoint. When each aircraft completes its objective, it comes back to the base.
In fighting the drug barons, civilian casualties need to be avoided during the operations. Pilots also need to be watched out for. A downed pilot needs to be rescued immediately, for if the drug barons capture the pilot, the pilot is gone for good—with no replacement waiting in the wings.
A plus to the game is that its interface is well laid out and is easy to interact with, while still having interesting and action-packed air combat. There are no preset missions, so it is a new experience each time the game is played. If you are a fan of classic aviation games, along with a love of strategy war games!
