Advanced Flight Trainer does make the most of what was available at the time, with CGA, four color graphics and sharp, polygon buildings and landscape. One of the things I remember was the landscape modeling would have the buildings getting larger as you approached them, letting you fly between buildings or even flying through some open ended hangars if you had a steady enough stick. I don't believe that any other simulator allowed you to do that up until Crimson Skies.
With 14 planes that you can fly and many modes that you can fly, including stunt-flying, racing and formation flying, along with others.

With 14 planes that you can fly and many modes that you can fly, including stunt-flying, racing and formation flying, along with others. Included was the awesome SR-71 Blackbird with physics that closely modeled the real thing. I brought this one
back up a number of years back to compare the parameters of the physics and was gratified to see that AFT had done the plane right. The top speed, acceleration, cornering was right on line with what the finally de-classified stats were on the real thing.
Each plane has its own flight parameters and the physics modeling was, I believe, among the first to attempt to use the real physics of each individual plane. For me, what makes this simulation great was having Chuck Yeager's actual advice as you are flying. The game set the standard for everyone else to follow with a "black box" recorder to replay the flight, multiple viewpoints, realistic cockpits and more. The game keeps track of how you are doing as a pilot and had a pilot's check list which I used with other simulators testing them against the standard of AFT.
This game is highly recommended in spite of the presence of the superior Version 2.0 and Air Combat, purely for the historical value of this ground-breaking simulator.
