Game Review (written by Kung_fu_tuesday) Added on: 02/08/2007
Elite. Well, what can be said about this game that hasn’t already been said? This game has to be, without doubt, one of the best games ever written for any computer. It has definitely got to be in the top 10 best games of all time. Why? Simple. One word. Addictive.
The original game was written by Ian Bell and David Braben in the early to mid 80’s, when technology was in its infancy, when the games of the time were … well… not so good looking, so they had to be something else, something that even games now have difficulty being, and that’s addictive and fun to play.

The basic idea of the game was to explore space, buy and sell stuff along
EliteEliteElite
the way, fight some bad guys, explore some more, and have fun. This game was not linear. You could just about go anywhere. The more you bought stuff at one planet and sold it at another for a profit, you made more cash and could buy upgrades for your ship, like missiles and rockets. Bad guys popped up sometimes, so had to be able to defend yourself.
Exploring the galaxy, well, the computer generated one, might sound dull to some people, even with today’s awesome graphics and sound, but this game rocked on a level that has never really bean matched. Yes, the graphics are crude, and yes, the sound was just ok, but the idea itself, and the actual gameplay, was second to none.
There have been similar games since this one, most notably Freespace, but this is the original and still the best.
Should you get this game… YES. Capital letters all the way! This about this… how many times have you gone out and purchased a game for $40 or more, just because it looked or sounded awesome? Graphics to die for and sound to drool over? I bet also that that game is now on the shelf or thrown in a draw somewhere because it was BORING! Games today rely more and more on these cool awesome effects to sell the game. Now, when Elite came out, there was no such thing as awesome graphics or cool sound, so games had to be addictive and fun. Elite is one of those precious games. Sickeningly addictive and fun. When I played this game when it first came out, I was playing it for 12 hours a day, every day, not for 2 weeks or a month, but for 2 YEARS!
In my opinion, on the most important elements of any game, addictive and fun, this game is the epitome of awesome. Nuff said!

Oh the memories are flooding back! The hours I wasted at my pc playing elite when I should have been working on some complex engineering code! Very few current games releases are this good.

Very addicting. The graphics were subpar at the time, but it was like stepping out of our world for a short time and jumping into another. This was when the manuals were deliciously thick! Wing Commander never came close to ELITE!

I could have been a lawyer if I spent the same amount of time doing my homework as playing elite.

I first played Elite on my very old Acorn Electron, it was on tape and the graphics were so bad that ships were just white outlines against black, but I loved it! It was a must buy when I got my Amiga and I spent years in that Cobra Mk3. No game of its type has ever come close to its addictiveness and playability.

I played this game for ages back in the 90's. Just couldn't get enough. I haven't found anything that hooks me as much as flying around with elite!

I HAVE PLAYED THIS GAME. IT IS QUITE CHALLENGING, BUT I ENJOYED IT, TO MY SUPRISE. ITS NOT MY USUALLY CUP OF TEA, BUT I FOUND IT TO BE CREATIVE, AND QUITE INTERESTING.
