Fast Attack, the name says it all. In Fast Attack you are the commander of a Los Angeles Class Attack Submarine with State-Of-The-Art Warfare equipment. Fast Attack was oddly enough made by Sierra in stead of Jane’s or Sonyalists Combat Simulations, but yet it lives up to the realism of the actual thing. If you can captain the submarine in this game then you have the aptitude to captain a real Los Angeles Class Attack Submarine in the Navy.
This is not a game like “Aces Of The Deep” , “Sub Command”, “Jane’s / Sonyalists 688i Hunter Killer”, or “Silent Service”.
Fast Attack take the realism to the extreme by making you punch in correct firing coordinates and ID Targets before you can even begin the sequence to fire off one of the TSLAM or TLAM Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. When you go to fire a torpedo you have 2 options available to you: you can either track them by sonar or by marking the range and firing coordinates from periscope.
You will also have to empty the ballast tanks every few hours just like a real submarine and even when you fire a torpedo if you reload the same tube from which you fired the guidance wire will be cut and the torpedo will become a dud. You can also fire a SSM (SUB-SURFACE to
Surface Missile) out of the four firing tubes and to do so you must go through all the actual stages of loading preparation including realistic time for loading and prep then you must go to a depth of 60 or less feet under water and punch in the radar firing coordinates and guide the missile to its target.
Your sonar operator also has amazing realism to him, any time a new contact comes into play whether it be an Akula Russian Class Attack Sub or a Simple whale he will notify you as if a real Sonar Operator would in the U.S. Navy. Your ECM or Electronic Counter Measures that you use for defence against torpedoes were also developed to be as realistic as feasible in a simulation. Whether your Electronic Counter Measures work against an enemy torpedo or not depends upon depth, pitch, cavitations, heading, and speed of your submarines “screws” or propellers. Your navigation is also done realistically due to the fact that submarines have no windows or external cameras you must navigate the endless mazes that the deep offer. In Fast Attack one wrong move will get you killed and one right move will get you unwanted attention form the enemy, play at your own risk!
