When you start this game up, it asks for a password, according to the year of a certain driver or whatnot. You had to have the booklet to answer this correctly (which caused problems when we could not find it). However, once you are in the game things go smoothly. The race consists of a lot of cars (I believe forty total) which leads to a lot of action.
You choose how many laps and can adjust your car to what you like. Then you proceed to drive in circles for a while.

You choose how many laps and can adjust your car to what you like. Then you proceed to drive in circles for a while. The computer controlled cars seem to drive perfectly, so it is very hard to get or keep a lead of any kind. What my brother and I ended up doing was driving backwards and
causing major crashes (they were quite spectacular). This is fun, especially since the computer cars just sit in place after they have crashed once. However, it takes a lot more to damage your car. So, with just one crash, you could litter the track with a dozen cars, which the following ones would have to steer through and such.
This is not the best racing game I have played, as far as racing goes, but it is probably one of the most fun (except for the Need for Speed series).
The graphics are not that great. The cars are all basic colors with no numbers or decals. This takes some fun and realism away, because the horde of opposing racers is nameless and unrecognizable from each other.
The grandstand is acceptable for the time period, as well as the track and barriers. Probably the nicest bit is the easy of pit row. When you enter pit row and stop at your space, a menu pops up allowing you to adjust your tires, gas, and the other odds and ends. Once everything is as you like, you can take off and get back into the race.
If you are looking for a game in which to race and win, this is probably not the game. It is very difficult. If you want a challenging game, or just a small game to play for a little while here and there, then this game may interest you. No matter the reason for playing, this game will likely lose its appeal after a few hours. Other racing games just offer more options. Indianapolis 500 is a game that is fun to play here and there, but will likely never be a mainstay on anyone's play list.
