I’ve only played the Amiga version of this game some years ago, but I remember the game well. You are a pilot from WW1 flying an old twin winged plane as an ace, trying to complete certain tasks but this game is mainly about full on dog fights with your enemies. The plane you fly is fairly simple in the way that your primary weapon is a machine gun or guns depending on the plane you choose and yes if I remember correctly you do get a choice of plane these are your main advancements for completing the tasks ahead of you.
This game reminds me of an early version of Red Barron I don’t know why I think they have a familiar feel to them when you are playing. Of all the old Amiga simulators this was one of my favourites along with Gunship another game with a very similar appeal. The settings and environments you fly in are quite pixelated, but it is an Amiga game after all and at the time the graphics were quite appealing, but this game did come with its faults the main fault being the speed of the planes which was very slow and stalling was common place which could drive you up the wall when in harsh dog fights. Once you got past the
lack of speed though the dog fights were quite good, what I did like about this game was the simulation such as having to land your craft in a more realistic manner than more modern simulators such as Ace Combat, meaning you could end the mission crashing in to the ground right at the end making getting landings right a very important part of the game.
This game is pure simulator and as with most PC and Amiga simulators offers an array of camera angles to control fights and allow you to soak in your surroundings better. The graphics when flying low were good with buildings and trees littering you surroundings and the sun hitting you in the face and enemy planes trying to take you down. The planes were actually nicely done with good dimensions and a striking resemblance to the actual planes of the time. The sounds in the game are good too from the sounds of machine gun fire to the whirling of aeroplanes flying by but the music is not as good a little irritating at times in fact, but who cares the main thing is the gameplay.
All in all, Knights of The Sky nice classic simulator to play.
