Game Review 1 (written by Anij) Added on: 09/10/2006
The first time I played PM2 was at my neighbor's house some years ago. At first I was a little skeptical of the game. The guy who lived next door said he thought it was boring, but when I tried it out I became addicted to it. It's a very addictive game.
PM2 was made by Gainax in the early nineties. It was translated into English by Soft Egg, and set to be released in the USA. Unfortunately, due to too many troubles in the plan, the release was cancelled, making most of the western world yet again void of this great kind of RPG/simulator. So, anyway, you play as a wandering adventurer who has been given a house and salary by the kingdom from saving it in times of trouble. The gods obviously believe you have done something great too, because now they're giving you one of their angel children to look after. If you do a good job, the girl will grow into a talented young lady; if you fail and lead her on the ways of the devil, you'll have the heavy burden of corrupting an angel whom the heavens entrusted you with...well, the story's not that great, but that's a rough outline.
The only other PM I've played is Princess Maker Legend of Another World; an SNES replica of PM2 in Japanese. Despite not being able to do as much (not just from the fact I couldn't understand a word) and not having as good graphics I still enjoyed the game.
I didn't like the music in either PM2 or PMLAW. I don't know, I guess that's just what "J-Pop" games sound like. As for the graphics, they're pleasant-to-look-at animé style graphics.
Other than the music, I can't think of much I didn't like about the game. I would like it if the story was better thought out, and if you could control more people (like giving yourself a job, getting a wife, having more children - boys too). Also, there should be more adventure areas, and generally more of everything. I like the Final Fantasy games too; it would be pretty cool if Gainax and Square collaborated to make a game together. How about "Princess Fantasy", or "Final Princess"? Plus, I think you should be able to do stuff more, rather than just organizing the schedule, doing adventure mode, or watching the girl do stuff.
Overall, it's an excellent game. I give it an 8 out of 10.
| | | | | Game Review 2 (written by Hwk1901) Added on: 09/04/2006 Princess Maker 2 has a very simple premise: raise a child. Sounds simple, eh? Well, trust me on this, it’s not easy! But, it isn't all that complicated either (that's a relief). Unfortunately, this game never reached Western shores, which is a shame. This game is quite fun. Your only hope is to find it somewhere on the Internet in English (if you don't read Japanese). And don't judge a game by its file size! This game may only be 7-9 MB large, but it is more fun than most of the 600+ MB games I have played! And this is largely influenced on Anime, so if you are not a big fan of Japanese animation, I have warned you. But this game may just change your mind about Anime.
Anime fans rejoice!!! Everywhere you look... Anime, anime, and even more Anime! I have always been a fan of Japanese art, and this game has easily become one of my favorite anime games. Every character looks different, from your child, your trusty Butler, Cube, and even residents of the castle, from the King, Queen, and court jester, all faces are different. The small sequences when your daughter is working at a job, or taking a vacation are also well done!
Unfortunately, my copy doesn't have sound, but I have downloaded some of the midis, and I must say, they sound very good. I have no idea what the sound effects are like (as no website has a single file of a sound effect in Princess Maker 2), so I can't judge those. But from what I hear with the music, sound is overall great.
Options, options, and even more, options! What kind of options, you ask? Well, there are an almost endless number of paths your daughter can take! She can be a writer, a painter, a fighter, a housewife, and, as the game title implies, a Princess! If you want replay ability, this game is one of the best in that category!
Even though this game never reached our shores, those who like Simulation games and/or Anime will instantly fall in love with this game (I sure did!). And with the many, many, many paths your daughter can take, this game will last a very, very, very (you get the point), very long time! Not to be missed! Find it today!
