Game Review (written by Agentbolt) Added on: 05/31/2007
PT-109 is a classic naval combat game that simulates being in the command chair of the most famous PT boat ever, PT-109, commanded by none other than John F Kennedy himself. The game takes place at any of several famous times and places in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The player takes a PT boat out onto the ocean and searches for task groups of vessels, and then must engage them. Of course, sometimes the vessels you are looking for will find you instead.

Although, the game's graphics are clearly a bit dated, it is still an excellent and fun game. Going with the "Maximum Armament" option is pretty much the only way to even hope to survive a battle, as the reinforcements are

either ineffective (The SBD Dauntless) or rarely available (A second PT boat sent in to support you) Also it is obviously not terribly realistic, as you will find yourself shooting down Destroyers (unlikely at best) and Cruisers (Simply not possible, one shell from a cruiser would sink a PT Boat). Submarines are by far the least fun to fight, as they are laughably easy to kill when on the surface, and when under water they tend not to attack, but are impossible to kill. You have depth charges, but actually hitting the submarine with one of them is dicey at best. It wouldn't be such an irritant except that there is no way to end a battle unless you die or kill all other vessels in the area, and with the submarine you can expect to find yourself floating aimlessly for a really long time until you are able to destroy it.
Considering the game is 20 years old, however, it is still amazingly enjoyable. You can control guns on the ship yourself or have your crew do it, radio the fleet for help, fire torpedoes and rockets, and it is of course always fun to check the damage report on your ship to see busted antennas, gaping holes in the hull, etc.
PT-109 is a game, I highly recommend to anyone, who enjoys naval combat games.
