Game Review (written by Dudde1) Added on: 05/14/2007
SSN 21 Seawolf was the first submarine simulation game I've ever played. It has very good graphics for a 1990s game, and portrays the submarine based fight quite realistically. In SSN 21 Seawolf, you are the commander of the SSN 21 Seawolf, the supreme nuclear submarine of the cold war era. In this game, your objectives are usually the gathering of intelligence, and sinking enemy naval units (battleships, cargo ships, and enemy nuclear subs).
SSN 21 Seawolf is armed with many kinds of weaponry, ranging from many types of torpedoes, to under-sea launched missiles.
The torpedoes are vastly different from those ones that most people are familiar with from those used in u-boats during WWII. Most of the torpedoes are capable of tracking enemy naval units by tracking their engine sounds. SSN 21 seawolf carries many different types of torpedoes that allow the player to use in different kinds of situations. For example, when attacking an enemy ship, the player may use the long range 'tracking' torpedoes, and when engaging enemy submarines, the player might use the fast-speeed, but shorter-range 'tracking' torpedoes.
When not engaging enemy naval units, players are usually at the command station watching the sonar screens to listen to the enemy submarines. This sonar can detect the sound of enemy subs that are miles

away, but careful, it can also detect a dolphin's whistle, so make sure you identify the 'blip' you see on the sonar screen before chasing it. Also when you 'ping' to search for enemy subs, you are also giving away your position to the enemy as well, so be careful when you 'ping'.
Now let's talk about SSN 21 seawolf's vitality. The submarine can only take two torpedo shots. However, the sub has a mechanism like the flares in the fighter jets, that shoots out 'loud sound making' things to mask SSN 21 seawolf's engine sounds. So if you see enemy torpedoes chasing you, you shoot those things and change course, dive / rise up, and hopefully the torpedoes won’t chase you. But be warned, those pesky enemy torpedoes can come back for 2nd or even 3rd try, until they run out of fuel. So this pretty much sums everything. Give this game a try if you want to taste some nuclear sub actions.

I loved this game and red storm rising back in the day. Really glad I found it here. Super fun game.

I think that this is a very under-rated game. It takes patience and concentration to play properly and it definitely is not a shoot'em up twitch game. Was one one my favourites from that era. You don't need awesome graphics to play and enjoy a good game. This game has good play and lots of interesting tactics and strategies.

Seawolf is my favorite PC game of all time. Very realistic and challenging. You become part of the action and no scenario is the same twice.

Great game. 1990s strategy simulation using the latest US naval technology! This was when EA was still a small company.now look where they've gone with gaming!

This is a great game. I spent many hours studying ASW and listening to the sonar wall trying to figure out the contacts for myself. I would recommend this game to anyone with the patience to spend some time planning strategies.

Great game, enjoyed it immensely back in the 90s when I had a windows 3.11 machine, great for two players.

Seawolf was an awesome game. It is really a shame that people have come to lose the meaning of what makes a video game fun

I really enjoyed this game in the early 90's, at that time it offered some very cool game play on the pc (remember this was before windows 95). At times it did seem like a buffed up milton bradley "Battleship" game. But it was on the PC!

It is an OK submarine game, considering the technology available at the time. Good game. I would recommend it to anyone looking for this genre of game.
