This truly is the game that started it and if you don’t believe me just download this and you’ll soon see…. It was released many years before CM.
Upon loading the game you are faced with a very basic looking menu. Essentially this is your “home-page” and to where you will return after each fixture.
There is nothing overly taxing or complicated about Football Manager, you simply type whichever number corresponds to your menu choice. This might be to view your remaining fixtures, check your position in the league table, sell one of your players or even take out a loan to cover any debt you may have accumulated.
When you have decided on which players you wish to select for your game that day you are taken to a graphical representation of the goalmouth action. I really should use the term “graphical” loosely as those unfamiliar with just how basic a Spectrum game could be will be in for a surprise otherwise! The graphics (such as they are) will seem laughable by even early 90’s standards but they were great at the time the game was made. What you will see is a few blocky stick-men kicking a square ball towards a Titanic sized goal. The cherry on the cake is some sort of bizarre noise whenever a goal is scored which one can only assume is supposed to be the crowd cheering?!
It is for reasons such as these that I thoroughly recommended you download this if you have even so much as a passing interest in the football management genre. If you remember the game, you’ll doubtless download it anyway for old time’s sake. But if you’ve never played you should definitely give it a go.
You have the opportunity to start in the 4th division then with skill and a little patience it shouldn’t be long before you’re rubbing shoulders with the big boys in the top division. You also get to take part in the FA cup. After each match you’ll be offered the chance to buy a new player - no transfer window here! Obviously it’s up to you to decide whether he is better than the personnel already at your disposal. It’s important when choosing players for a particular game you don’t simply pick the “best” team. You need to take into account how tired they are too. A team full of superstars might well get beaten by less skilful but fully refreshed players so watch out! If you run out of cash you can always get a loan from the bank - you can repay it once your finances are back on track but don’t forget the interest payments in the meantime…..
There are so many fresh ideas in this game, really groundbreaking stuff for its time. I’ve spent several hours enjoying the nostalgia and I thoroughly recommended you do too!
