Kick Off 2 was the first football game I ever played, back in about 1990 on my house mate Darren's computer at university. The games now have up to date players and they even look like them and have skills sets reflecting them, but the actual fun I have playing the new ones isn't as good as that first one as it was the house competitiveness that was the fun part.
After about 3 months, I'd just learned about tackle, shoot, shimmy past people and those are similar even now in footy games.

After about 3 months, I'd just learned about tackle, shoot, shimmy past people and those are similar even now in footy games. But by that time the house had moved on to Larry games and another huge game called Balance of Power. While I was learning I always tried to get an England
or Arsenal with one of the others playing a low league team.
Going back to the game play I liked being able to choose different types of field you were playing at, and also the famous after touch where you could "use the force" to swerve the ball after you'd kicked it. This was the main thing Darren had not told the rest of us when he showed us how to play the game.
One area where modern games are better is that you were never sure who would be where when you kicked up field, but that added to the fun. Something I've not noticed in modern games is the different styles and tempers of the refs. You could have some obviously bad decisions due to the ref which was funny. It was normally VIN who received all the bad decisions. I'm sure there was a special code you could type in and the players all went huge.
A Kick Off 3 is the greatest games! You’ll need downloading it!
