Necrodome is an action driving game that was published by Strategic Simulations Incorporated and was intended for mature audiences only. It was released in the middle nineties and was developed by the Raven Software Corporation and was made specifically for play on the personal computer with Windows capabilities. The game plays in both the third person and first person perspectives, depending on the action and scene at hand. It features a dark, cyber-punk theme and it began as a sequel to CyClones.
Part way through the design process, however, the artistic worm turned and the sequel idea was ditched in favor of a brand new game.
Necrodome is set far into the future, and like many futuristic driving games, much of the action involves vehicular combat. Necrodome, as one could likely guess from the title, takes place in a gladiator style dome, only the combatants are cars. The user will drive a very heavily armored car around the stadium, blasting his opponents and seeking the enemy flag. Usually this is found in a locked or heavily guarded area, and retrieving it is quite a challenge. After fetching the flag, the gamer must safely return to his starting position with it in order to complete the mission.
There are more than thirty matches available that feature this style of play.
There are some very interesting features to Necrodome. The alternating views is nice, and also the user has the ability to leave his vehicle in order to access tight areas on foot. This is very similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, and the user’s character will be quite vulnerable without the protection of his armored car. The opponents that the player will face, both on foot and in his car, will vary. He will have to gun down some fairly mundane foot soldiers, as well as some that can fly. On top of that, there are eight different varieties of vehicular opponents.
A very nice bonus with Necrodome is the multiplayer functions. The gamer can choose to play cooperatively with another player and fight against the computer’s AI. In this mode of play, one person will drive the car and the other will literally ride shotgun and serve as the gunman. The user can also select to fight against his friends and family in a gladiator style game, which is just as fun.
Overall, Necrodome is a good game to play and is filled with a lot of fast and furious action. Bullets are flying all the time and the user will have to keep his wits about him in order to dodge them all and return home with his enemy’s flag.
