Plane Crazy is Sega Soft’s answer to the three-dimensional racing game. It is very similar to Pole Position, the old arcade hit, in that users have to traverse a series of nifty three dimensional race courses, hit checkpoints within an allotted amount of time in order to earn more time to play. The major difference is that Plane Crazy features cute little cartoonist air planes instead of formula one race cars.
Eight players are allowed in a single race, and Plane Crazy is more of an action packed, fun kart race than a real flight simulation.
There are three different kinds of races for the users to choose from. The user can take a single race, where the user will compete against the seven other planes, any
combination of computer and carbon based opponents, on one of five different courses. The ghost race is another option, where the user only plays against him in an effort to beat his own best scores. He has the race tracks to himself, making ghost race a very good training option for learning the controls and practicing the game play. The final type of race is the championship race, where all five courses are tackled. The user plays against the computer planes on all five courses, and the plane with the most points upon completion of all five courses is the overall winner. It is the equivalent of career or campaign mode in other games.
There is more to the game than simply racing. In championship mode, the user acquires money based on where he finishes in the races, when he crosses various check points, and what difficulty setting he has chosen. The money can then be used to purchase upgrades for the plane to make it even better. The engine can be upgraded, the airbrakes can be improved, the frame can be bettered, and the wings can be changed. There are also some special upgrades that can be purchased for single races to improve the planes and customize it to the user’s preferences.
In short, Plane Crazy is a fun little game that relies on action as opposed to graphics and stellar sound to draw people in and keep them addicted. The game is just that, addictive, whether playing against yourself or against other airplanes. It is a colorful, engaging game that most gamers will be able to enjoy on some level.
