Pole Position was probably one of the funniest games I played as a kid. Although, it was probably also one of the hardest ones I played. Especially at the arcade.It's genius is in its simplicity. Pretty much you go as fast as you can in order to qualify for the championship race. You have to keep your eye on the signs that come up saying which way to turn and make split second decisions when trying to get past other cars. Also, you have the time going against you.
The track is tough and you will crash over and over and over again when you first try. Along with the explosions go your dreams of making the championship race. Start over and try again.A great part is the audio for its time. The explosions and the car speeding up and slowing down. All can be heard in its wonderful glorious synthesized soundness. But it was pretty good at the time. I remember thinking, "Can it actually get any more real than this?" Yeah. Video games have gotten slightly better I guess. This game is definitely a must have when it comes to old arcade games. Especially now that you don't have to give up your laundry money or allowance in order to get
beat.
It really has become an arcade classic, and to have it on your pc will allow for good nostalgic fun for hours and hours. Because that's how long it'll take you to get good at the game again. Of course with a game of its age one can't expect to have many modes of play, but the simple gameplay is straightforward and great. High speed races. Clenching teeth. Arteries bursting. Fist - to - computer poundings because you can't believe that you just screwed up on that turn again. All of this is part of Pole Position Arcade. Quite possibly the best racing game to come from the arcade. Definitely one of the most addicting. So, dust off that old F1 helmet get those racing gloves on. Bring out the tight fire - retardant suit and get ready for some awesome racing courtesy of Namco and friends. Enjoy!
