Speed Racer: The Challenge of Racer X is a third person racing and driving game that was part of a large series of games, originally marketed in Japan as Mach GoGoGo. It features the super car, Mach 5, and is classic Japanese anime in theme. Published and developed by Accolade Incorporated, Speed Racer: The Challenge of Racer X was released in the early nineties.
Accolade acquired the license to this classic 1960s cartoon and offered gamers several challenges based on the series. The Challenge of Racer X features Speed Racer’s older brother, Racer X, as the title character.
Many of the other classic characters also make appearances, such as Pops, Speed Racer’s mother, Trixie (Speed Racer’s girlfriend), the younger brother Spritle, and the pet chimpanzee called Chim-Chim. In this specific installment, Speed Racer challenges his brother Racer X to best him a series of seven unique campaign courses. Each track is loaded with the classic Speed Racer obstacles: road gaps, oil slicks, hair pin turns, pylons, and also other drivers looking to give Mach 5 a tour of the fence and wreck him.
Speed Racer’s Mach 5 is very easy to learn how to maneuver. While this cuts down on the frustration of wielding such a fast car, it downplays the realistic side of things. Driving the Mach 5 is like driving a feather,
with no penalties for g-force on corners or other obstacles that should induce a negative effect on the car. Still, the Mach 5’s special abilities are fun to use and are easy to master. The letters A through G on the standard QWERTY board access all of the abilities, such as super jumps or surviving under the water. Fans of the initial series will be pleased to recognize some of the great Speed Racer gadgets, such as the auto jack and the chopper. The user will receive monetary bonuses for winning races and will progress to the next level by doing such. Two players can also play simultaneously on the same track via hot seat or through modem play.
The graphics of Speed Racer: The Challenge of Racer X are superb, and the tracks are especially inventive or ingenious. Many of the obstacles and track designs seem repetitive after some play, but it is not that much of a detractor. It is a satisfying play, especially well suited for diehard fans of this classic series. It’s worth downloading immediately and enjoy!
