Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 02/08/2008
Advanced Civilization was published for the PC in 1996. The game was on expansion of Avalon Hill’s Civilization board game which is one of the best strategy board games ever made.
The game is a fantastic adaptation because it featured good graphics and sounds and was able to bring the whole experience of playing the board game to gamers. The game successfully captures the concept, the atmosphere and the mood of the game. What makes this game even greater is the fact that it allowed a gamer to play the board game even when alone.

The game has a good balance of strategy, diplomacy, and economy management. The game has enough challenges that keep gamers interested. This is an empire management game that has sound principles.

The game is composed of different rounds with each round with thirteen phases. All these phases are linked to each other so your decisions will affect the outcome of the coming phases.
The different phases include the following: First there is taxation. Tax is collected from your territories and will be one of the major sources of income for you. The money collected from tax is what’s used to build ships and other important infrastructures. In conflict, you will need to resolve problems arising from a city being attacked or other issues. The results of the census affect how you can move tokens and ships around. Ships can be built and maintained by the treasury from taxes collected.
To build cities, you must place six tokens on a province that has the city mark. Provinces without the city mark can be turned into cities by placing 12 tokens. In expansion, the number of tokens in the game represents the population. The number of tokens that can be used for expansion depends on the number of tokens already in the province. When there are too much tokens in a province then there is overpopulation. When your territory is overpopulated, you need to reduce the number of tokens in this area. In the game you can also engage in Trade. As you go through the phase of acquiring trade cards, there will be one card per city that you can get. During this phase you can also buy gold. You can use these trade cards during the trade phase of the game. The cards represent different valuable materials which you can use to trade with other cities so you can get what you need.
Aside from trade cards there are also calamity cards. Once you pass by the calamities phase, the calamity (famine, etc.) will take effect. There are also civilization cards in the game which helps you advance in the game. When you have a specific number of cards at a particular level, you can move on to the next era in the phase of the succession marker.
This is a fantastic strategy game that will keep you playing non-stop for hours!
