Many years ago company, called Interplay, published this little game. Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space covers the era of the space race, all the technology and historic information is meticulously followed in this incredibly detailed turn based sim. You can start off as the Russians or the Americans and build your space program, hire your astronauts and train them. You research and build your launch vehicles, keep ahead and invest wisely. If you’re a fan of turn based games and always wanted to have your own space program, this is the game for you.
You will control everything, from scheduling launches to controlling RD and following the progress of your opponent. Each side has its store of historically correct hardware and characters. Even the way the news people spin successes and failures in your program. All eyes are on you, as you struggle to see who will win the space race. Critical decisions such as who will do what for missions, planning even an astronauts career so that he/she will be ready and fully trained when that critical mission with it's critical hardware will be ready.
I personally found this game difficult to get accustomed to. Once I had played through once or twice I could actually make decent progress against the AI. Keep on top of your research and
keep ahead of the competition, because if you don't, your funding will be adversely affected and it will become increasingly harder to keep pace. I found playing as the Russians easier, as they seemed to have greater success early on and this leads to a greater degree of reliability in technology and launch vehicles. But it is hard to get to the moon first.
Definitely, not an easy game, but that being said it is a game that will keep you coming back time and time again to see, if you've got what it takes to win that race into space.
