Game Review (written by J-rock) Added on: 09/04/2006
Civilization is the greatest game I ever played. Now that we have that out of the way, I’ll tell you why. First of you have the ability to create your own civilization. Any style of world, race and kick ass handle. I’m a big fan of customization, but this game created it. Talk about replay ability, I’ve been playing this game for 16 years! Even cooler is the fact that you can actually learn about history from playing this game. Famous leaders/dictators from history and their civilizations, along with the wonders of the world they created and the scientific advances they developed.
You can use all of these tools to customize your own civilization into any type of race you like; whether you are a peaceful democratic type that is more interested in scientific improvements, or if you are a totalitarian dictator type that is hell bent on destruction and world domination. Which ever you preference, civilization is the game for you and I’m sure you’ll enjoy hours and years of fun playing this game like I have.
The first time I played civilization I was 13 or 14 years old and my brother had bought it. Our computer was so old that any games we played on it had to be either on floppy disk or for dos. It took

me a while to get the hang of it. But, after a few pointers from my brother I found that it was a very addicting game.
I would play it everyday after school till bed. One thing I liked about it was that it was the type of game that you could play on mute while listening to your own music and still enjoy the game play to its’ fullest potential.
The graphics in this game are not mind blowing. But for a game that is almost two decades old, their pretty good. They really do a good job and the game is still fun.
One of the things I like about the first civilization is the simplicity of the graphics. I’ve played civilization 11 and although it does have superior graphics I find that the game play suffers because of it. Now, that might not make a lot of sense but if you think about it: with highly defined graphic there is more to distract the eye and it becomes harder to focus on your strategy and what’s actually going on in the game. This is a minor point and at no way a nock on civilization 11 in anyway.
But really this game could be the greatest ever or just suck and you’d never know unless you actually go play it. So stop listening to my drab and go play CIVILIZATION!

Definitely one of the best games during its time. Brilliant game. It has set the foundation for many other strategy games.

The games were great at the time (1996). I remember spending the whole weekend playing it on my 75MHz laptop. The turn-based action was easy to follow and it feels great to crash every civilization existing. The expansion pack was fun also. I get to play alien nation and use cool technologies.

I have played the civilization games for years. I love all of them. I agree with a lot of the other comments however, when it is said that the first one is the best. Still they are all great!

Easily one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played. It's refreshing to know that people of my vintage remember it as fondly as I do.

Mezza82 (02/08/2009)
This game is awesome. It is what got me into games in the first place. Responsible for lots of misspent teenage years.

Probaly the best game I've ever played. I've played it for hours and hours. Most of Sid Meier's games are good, but this one is great. I recommend it for anyone and for most ages. If you like strategy games, you're going to love Civilization.

Great game. Nothing beats the original. I like the ones that came afterwards, but still can't beat the original.

Blayet (11/17/2008)
I spent many enjoyable hours playing this one! I expect it would still be worth a go even today.

Hands down the best game ever. I have found memories of playing civilization one and two with my wife on an old lap top. We would pass it back and forth playing our turns and then realize that we had been doing this for 13 hours. Extreamly addictive and fun. I have the entire Civilization collection now and still it is the best game ever.

I remember playing this game when I got my first computer. I remember getting the 16mb ram. Kind of sad, but this game got me addicted to video games. That's when I knew I was in deep trouble. Awesome game never better

One of the best games I have ever played. If you like this, civilization revolution is also another one to check out. A lot more modern, but still very fun.

Drachen (07/20/2008)
Simply the best game ever. Very Chesslike in its abstraction, simplicity and variation. The equivalent from a tactical/historical point of view would be Steel Panthers.

This is maybe not the best game ever. But only because that title belongs to CIV IV which took the old CIV and made it just about 100 times better. But for the fact that this game is almost 20 years old, it really is incredibly deep and replayable.

I remember my dad wouldnt get off the Amiga for this. I now know why, timeless quality. Up there with the all time greats for sure.

The game that started Turn-Based Strategy. I remember playing this game everyday for 6 hours when I was 10 years old. First off the replay value of this game is amazing,a full 10/10. The sheer strategy of this game is so in-depth you will keep playing over and over again to perfect it. This game is about the micro-management of the workers in your city, and military units. The tech tree is quite lucid compared to the new Civilization IV but I mean the quality of the AI of this game was amazing for its day and age. A 10/10 and trust me I dont hand those out often.

The one that started it all. Still great fun to play and so addictive.

Seimo28 (04/06/2008)
This game is amazing, requires a lot of thinking and before you know it three hours have gone by and you're just getting started!

Civilization, is one of my best and favorite old dos game from way back in the 1980s. Everynight I used to play Civilization, cause it was very addictive. I could always defeat this great game of the 80s. I'll be looking forward to downloading more of my favorite dos games from this website. Just Keep Up the Great Work with it and keep bring good old quality dos games to life again.

Still addictive after all these years! Unbelievable how much of the gameplay you remember years later. Sid Meier is single handedly responsible for many a sleepless night in primary school!

Krich_son (02/25/2008)
This is the best of all of the civilization games. I started playing it when it first came out and still love it.

Tuckinsf (02/15/2008)
The only reason I bought my latest computer was in order to play the most recent version. I have spent a good part of the past ten years playing this game.

Tuckinsf (02/15/2008)
This is seriously the best game I have ever played! I loved this game so much. You need downloading it immediately.

Djustice (02/14/2008)
This game rocks, I played it when I was young and still play today.

Killaduck (02/07/2008)
The beginnings of what is one of the best games of all time. No doubt. I have been playing it for over 15 years and only upgrade my computer when a new release comes out - it's the only game I play these days and it's still as addictive and interesting as ever!

Don (01/28/2008)
Very fun and challenging game. A game ahead of its time and one of the best games I’ve ever played

Maphors (01/17/2008)
The first time I played CIV I had no idea on what to do except take over the world. I played on Earth, Chieftian, 7 empires, as the Germans and before I took the last city (America, Boston) my brother looked at it and asked me what I was doing. I apparently did not build any buildings in the cities and advance very little in sciences and had nothing but chariots. I finished at 1550 AD and got a 28% rating. Apparently that was a decent score. Later would realize that one could launch a space ship without ever having to harm an opponent. You could beat the game it 10 moves or 1000. With a concept of starting with nothing, growing and evolving towards cultural, intellectual and finally historic significance from a tribe to an empire with the user to choose several paths to get there, one could not have gotten it better than Sid Meier.

Claytonmccray (01/16/2008)
I really love this game!

Peachville (01/05/2008)
This is where it all started! It not only started the series but laid waste to the concept that computer board games were boring.

Purpleskyway (12/22/2007)
I just love this game it’s the first great game of its time.

People that downloaded Civilization also downloaded the following games:

Magic: The Gathering Warcraft: Orcs and Humans
Oregon Trail Game True Love
The Settlers II Gold Edition Colonization
