Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/05/2007
For people familiar with the original Clash of Steel, it was released in 1993 by SSI who lives up to its name very well. Clash of Steel is a World War II themed war strategy game with a grand scope and great attention to detail. Clash of Steel: Future Editions is a remake of the original game with some nice improvements.
In the Future Edition, Clash of Steel offers the same great strategy game as the original. Gamers choose from between Axis and Allied forces and battle it out for control of Europe and North Africa during the Second World War.
The game has a turn-based time limit, and the goals must be accomplished by January of 1946 (the game begins in 1939) in order to win.
As the leader of one of the war’s main factions, the user is pitted with the task of carefully managing all of the faction’s military might: ground, air and naval. Defense is also a key factor, especially to the Axis forces that are seeking to rid the lands of the usurping Allies. The goal of the game is to hold all of the assigned territories, or rout the opponent completely from the occupied lands.
Clash of Steel focuses almost entirely on military strategy with few other details to worry about. However, the military aspect is so

detailed, that it is mind-numbing enough to keep track of so many units and such varied attacks. It is up to the user to position units for attack or defense after assembling them with the correct balance of units to support one another. The user controls the units’ movements and has to insure they do not get too far ahead of supply convoys, or the consequences could be dire. Naturally, the user must lead the units into combat. He or she must also spend a fair amount of time researching new military technologies in order to improve and empower the units available.
One area that shows noticeable improvement between the Future Edition and the original Clash of Steel is the use of diplomacy to sway a battle. This is likely due to the fact that one of the main changes between the two editions is the advancement of the AI for Future Editions. There are also numerous other bugs that were fixed.
In short, Clash of Steel: Future Edition is the game that the original Clash of Steel would have been had it been thoroughly tested. It is the exact same game, with no changes in maps or scenarios. It is basically a glorified patch. The original Clash of Steel is a game for the pure strategist, but this would be the edition to download, if given a choice. The user will be much more impressed with the competence of the AI. If you want pass your spare time with pleasure and fun you need downloading this wonderful game! You’ll be excited and satisfied!

I felt this game was hard to follow. It is not on the strategic scale that I enjoy. The Germans have a hard time winning unless you create scenarios.
