Hey hey. Now we're talking about the routes of modern day gaming. Cohort was the predecessor for more up-to-date games such as Caesar which was also made by Impressions. On Cohort 2 you can see that many improvements have been made since the first draft and (although it was made in 1993) still gives a lot of fun gaming hours to be enjoyed in the Roman Empire, battling for control. If you have played any of the Caesar or Pharaoh games by Impressions then you can clearly see the similarities between them – this is not a bad thing but a very good thing as Cohort gives you a comfortable feeling whilst playing – also vice-versa for playing the Cohort first then newer games after – which is what I initially did.
The game is set as a two dimension RPG game and is in real time. The other (fairly) new feature at the time was that you can pause the game during conflicts - thus enabling you to ensure your strategy is pulling through or to amend orders if required. This also helped give better control of the battle as you can see how your forces measure up under the barbarian onslaught! You can also control large groups of units at a time to save individually giving the same order again and again. The types of units which were available were varied too and made a big difference in the large battles. You could use archers, cavalry and light and heavy infantry

– My own strategy formula is for every 10 light infantry at the front, I’d had an equal amount of heavy infantry then 20 archers and a group of 20 cavalry waiting just in front of the archers – in case the infantry lines are broken – this way your archers can constantly attack whilst the other units battle it out, hand to hand. Lastly you can also choose to play as the barbarians if you want, however they don’t have the same, full amount of units which are available as the Roman. My own personal opinion is that The maps were really fun back in the day and I remember being a young lad and watching my dad play this game but he didn’t even let me play until I had my own P.C - what a shame because this game cannot be missed!!!! 5*'s
I really enjoyed playing this game and I’d definitely recommend it to other people
