Game Review 1 (written by Jettral) Added on: 09/30/2006
The game itself goes along with all the Sid Meyers games you can think of. However, as it is a Sid Meyers game, it does have its does enjoy its own value in that way. Sid Meyers created a lot of special games. They were out there, unique. Granted, he got some flack for this as some of the games didn't fly so well, overall, he did wonderful.
Colonization is very fun. To be in the Colonial Era is fun in itself. But to play a game depicting it can be spectacular, especially if you enjoy this type of historical fiction like games.
The game-play interface is somewhat shaky at points but it lays a foundation for future games to build on. Also, the very theme of the game is balance enough to compensate for sometimes hard to get interface.
The game-play and plot is very entertaining in its own right as well. One might expect oneself to eventually get bored with such a theme but the game-play keeps you going. Once you get used to the combinations and the rule outline you can find that it grows on you very easily. I would have to say that that final trait is what has made the game last through the ages.
In the end, I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys classic games at all

or anyone who simply enjoys Sid Meyers games. It truly embodies the classic Sid Meier style and the uniqueness of this fact makes it very playable to this day.

Game Review 2 (written by Paxruss) Added on: 08/25/2006
I bought this game when I first saw it on QVC. I ordered it right before Christmas and once it showed up, I was not disappointed. Between the microeconomic, politics and all the Indian details, this game has never grown tiring or boring. I have found that ever new game, whether on a random map or preload New World map is always different and always exciting.
I am working hard on this great website so I can download it and once again play one of the best old school DOS games ever created. I think that Sid Meier is a total genius and deserves to be more highly rated in the gaming field. All of his titles are fresh and exactly what he says they will be. I remember the first time I ever played Colonization; it had to take me about two months to beat the first game. I kept trying to build and learn, then when it came down to the final Declaration of Independence. It was the hardest fight I had yet. It took forever and many more times of playing and losing, which I did the first time as well.
But once you can successfully win in the easier levels, the final declaration of independence gets very much harder with every increase in difficulty. I have always enjoyed playing as the Dutch the best. They have a better economy and can withstand the flooding of the market once you begin your trading with the Inca to the west. That is the best way to win. Many times of playing, I have had over 100,000 dollars in money and even more in stored resources waiting to be sold. It is really a matter of not flooding the market too soon and then has safe shipping lanes to travel to and from Europe while not being picked off by either Buccaneers or by going to war and not have the naval superiority that is required too successfully fight in and then ultimately win in a war in this game.
And I don't just mean the final battle of the game, but in any conflict, the player with the rights to the sea can out maneuver and out play any other opponent and win. I just wish for the most part that the computer was a little harder and more strategic when it comes to planning a battle and how to spread resources and make a profit. It is challenging to see what I can do every time I play and always makes it a bit more interesting.

This is one of my all-time favorite games. Though a new version is being released this month (Sept 2008), the old version is also pretty great.

Addictive game for those who enjoy the strategy of exploration and building an economy/military structure over high-level graphics. What I like the most is that the game outcome and difficulty is impacted by the opening map which changes every game. At all levels, the key for me seems to be location and economic development. Miltary development and having Benjamin Franklin in Congress helps keep competing nations in check which may or may not be terribly important based on the level of play and individual strategy. At higher levels, you are competing against the competing nations much more in the sense that you want to declare independence before the other computer nations. At higher levels, I like to attack more often and concentrate on getting Liberty levels up to 50% so that one nation drops off as a competitor as quickly as possible. I always try to locate a colony either in a quick money maker (silver) or long-term (trees, food, ore available) location preferably with less hostile tribes, other ample resources, and a quick route back to host country. After you get the right location, it all comes down to development, growth, and attacking competitors so they cannot declare independence first.

I have been looking for this game for a long time. Sweet memories, so the sun is shining, my computer was too heavy to carry outside in those days!

One of the first PC games I aquired. absolutely superb! It's nice to see that the creator developed this game giving it a new dimension with Civilization.

I really enjoyed this game, when I was a child. I played 24 hs in a round, but I won! You need to put a person to make "campanas" (songs?) of freedom, then you can free yourself and that´s very interesting!

This is a really fun game. It may have been one of the first I have ever played in my gaming life.

Mathbab (02/18/2008)
A classic game, one of the best ever. It's hard to understand why there is no sequels being made of this one. You never get tired of playing it, you always, always come back to it.

Grew up with this game and it's still the one I judge all others by. Simple, yet deceptively in-depth. Replay value is through the roof. Personally I prefer Colonization to its more successful Civ brother.

Oh no! I remember spending nights on this game. Played it for months. If I get it again now I'm finished! Do not even start it if you haven't got a lot of time to spare. If you are like me you'll be totally hopelessly addicted. But this one was indeed a masterpiece.

This is cool game. Actually, one of the best I’ve ever played. Nowadays we need more from the games, like the old stuff. You might spend hours on it.

It's one of the best, the micromanagement and unit build hasn't been seen really since, except for the AD1602 series, which isnt that bad but it's not COLO!
