Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 04/17/2008
Commander Headquarters, also called Command Headquarters, is a real time combat strategy game that was created in the middle nineties. It was programmed by Dan and Bill Bunten and Alan Watson at Ozark Softscape. It is a strategy game that is in the look and style of the classic board game Risk.
Commander Headquarters (also called Command H.Q.) begins with a colored map of the world, the colors indicating ownership of countries and cities between the factions. The user initially has a choice of starting a new war or continuing a saved one, and he can also choose to watch some historical style films.

of five computer players of varying personalities. The user can also choose what year the battle will take place in, which will obviously effect the units available to him. The earliest year playable in 1918, and the most recent warring year is 2023. There are two years in between, and also a random features, signified by ?????. After selecting the year of the ensuing battle, the user will have to simply select what color he would like to symbolize his faction, having a choice of only red or blue. This determines the side the user will play from. Benevolently, the gamer can also choose the amount of money the opposition starts with, which is similar to selecting a difficulty level. The default amount is 60, but it can be changed to anything from zero to hundreds of dollars.
The map shows the world, and the user navigates the map by using the cross hair on the screen, driven by the mouse. This will tell the user what type of terrain he is on, will offer information on the cities, and will also be used to select and deal with his units while moving or fighting. The game keeps the user well informed by way of a scrolling marquis along the bottom of the screen. This interactive screen shows the user what cities are being threatened and basically narrates the battles on the screen.
Beyond that, the game plays very similar to many other strategy games. The user will have to build armies and move them to the best strategic location in order to defend his holdings and expand his horizons. He will have to use the right combinations of units in order to best defend against the enemy. It is, overall, a thought provoking, beer and pretzels style of strategy game.
