Fantasy General is a turn based war game in the style of the better known Panzer General but with a high fantasy twist. Lead your armies against the evil Shadowlord.
The game allows 3 different modes of play which are Arena(single map, highly customizable), Scenario(single mission, set parameters to complete) and campaign (The whole story, create a character to lead your troops). In any mode the most important part is battles, You command four types of unit mortal, magical, beast and mechanical on a hex field battleground.
Units from each type are divided into classes which are Infantry (Heavy & Light), Archer, Skirmisher, Cavalry(Heavy & Light), Sky Hunter, Bombardier, Siege Engine and Spell Casters.
Some units may be upgraded between battles to become more powerful and many different tactics may be employed to gain advantages for example some units can hide and wait for an enemy to come close enough and be ambushed. Spells and magic user units also provide interesting tactical options.
There are more than 120 different units to command in all, as well as magical items to find and additional hero type characters which may join you in your battles so it doesn't get boring quickly.
In campaign mode you can chose to play as Lord Marcus, Knight Marshall Calis, Archmage Krell and
Sorceress Mordra, all of whom have different advantages Knight Marshall Calis can heal wounds once every battle, he can purchase cavalry units at a lower price, and, under his command units get 20 more points to their morale. Lord Marcus's units will start with one level of experience, and heroes are more likely to join your leader. You will also be allowed to have a larger army than normal. Archmage Krell is obviously adept at magic, he buys magical and spell caster units at a discount. Sorceress Mordra can, in addition to spells, summon two magical units before every battle and has the ability to recruit beasts.
Whichever you choose you will need to make the best use of your advantages as you war across the lands (From grasslands to icy mountains and jungles) and battle the four lieutenants of the Shadowlord in succession before you face the lord himself.
Scenario and Arena modes also allow you to play as the 'evil' sides whose armies are made up of Goblins, orcs and undead.
Really, if you manage to finish the game you will want to start again with a different leader and master some new tactics. A great amount of variety is available in a game that looks great and has no real flaws that spoil enjoyment.
