Gender Wars is among one of the more entertaining games out in the early days when games like X-Com and Theme Park were around. Gender Wars doesn't take the same turn-based tactics like some games did around that time, it is all real-time and the carnage is rather interesting. You have a team of soldiers under your command, and you have to think over your tactics carefully, because there is always more enemies, than your troops. Although Gender Wars looks like more complicated, it is in fact classical real-time strategy.
The male and female factions differ in missions as you try to take down the opposing leader by the end of the game, I'm not exactly sure if there is a difference in powers.
Even if the graphics look dated, this game is rather fun if you're looking for a 3rd-Person Isometric view very similar to Baldur's Gate by Bioware. Although it does not match the technological part that Baldur's Gate does, it has a relatively easy interface to interact with. The graphics match the bits of its time, but I'm very sure those who played DOS games during the mid 90's can appreciate the aesthetics and animation details given to each and every character, whether they are soldiers or civilians.
The sound can be agitating
at times. Earlier attempts to get it to operate became unfruitful, but when it did come around to working, it seemed alright. You won't find the popular japanese MIDIs playing as much as you would hear guns blazing. Regardless of whether you have the sound on or not won't affect your gameplay. Compared to modern games today, sound does not give a strong indication of enemy locations due to the fact that 3D sound is not as refined back then.
Considering how fast and difficult games are today, the difficulty setting for this game can be easy at times. But I'm not saying this game is easy at all, but if you play it conservatively you will find yourself pacing through this game quite well.
Despite the taboos of gender conflict, there is no distinct bias presented in this game. You can place any sort of faction in place of the other two. Men are trying to gain supplies and assassinate the female leader, women are trying to also gain supplies and assassinate the male counterpart.
Overall, to those who like to play classic squad-based action games, this is the game for you. There's a lot of blood, death, mayhem to be had. This game was one of the many at the heels of Castle Wolfenstein that had a bloodbath of gaming fun.
