Jones in the Fast Lane is a really fun game.
I am an avid fan of games that simulate life. I really like the graphics, especially the realistic way the characters look. I like the look of the different apartments the player can live in, from the dilapidated poverty-stricken first home to the most expensive one with a modern and chic look.
One thing that has always bugged me about this game is that the mascot never actually appears while you are playing the game.

One thing that has always bugged me about this game is that the mascot never actually appears while you are playing the game. You only see him on the title screen and such. I would have liked this mascot, who I presume is named Jones, to make a cameo appearance in the game at the very least.
The music is quite catchy. There

are many humorous little things in the game, such as the comments made by the non-playable characters. For example, the fast food worker would say "Would you like some Thousand Isla.... I mean secret sauce with that?" and the grocer would say "No tipping, please!" The landlord will garnish the player's wage if he or she fails to pay the rent, which can make the game quite difficult. You may have to buy different clothes depending on what kind of job you get as you move up the career later. If you show up to work in your default casual clothes, your employer may say "You are not properly dressed for work!" and then you will not be able to work until you manage to get yourself properly dressed for work. That is another thing that makes the game a bit more challenging.
I think that the player should get more of a reward for finishing first, such as a nice animation or screen of the player enjoying their new-found success.
I have played this game extensively when I was a child, and I would play against my family members. It was a favorite game of mine back then, and a precursor to the newer life simulation games I would later become obsessed with, namely The Sims. This is a great, fun way to pass the time. It is unique as one of the few life simulation PC games of its time, and it provides a great standard for the genre I greatly enjoy.
I would strongly recommend this game for everyone of all ages, and it is great that it can be played alone or with a friend, living large and in the fast lane!

Jones in the fast lane is a great game that can replace some ordinary old fashion board games. It is fun to play this game with a bunch of friend or with the family.

Here is a quick walkthrough on how to beat Jones. (I assume that you eat every week and if you dont have a refrigerator, buy "fries" and nothing else) General strategy first: Take work at monolith (try for clerk) - educate "Trade School", go for "checker" at blacks market. After a full week of work there, go for "butcher" there. You should be a butcher around week 6. When that's done educate "Junior College" and buy dress clothes and after around 1-2 weeks of working as a butcher you should try for "assistant manager" at blacks market. At week 8, go for le securite apartment and cash up quick for a refrigerator. When you have one - stock up at least 4 weeks of food (the fridge could take maximum 6 weeks). Why the hurry to get security apartment and the fridge? You don't have to spend valuable time to go to monolith every round. Buy business clothes. Educate pre engineer and engineer after that and try to be "department manager" at factory. If not - work another week at blacks market. When you are dep man and have worked there a full week - upgrade to engineer at factory. Educate business adm. When that's done you have enough education to become general manager at factory which is the best work in the game. (one other way to educate is to get business adm before the engineering stuff to be manager at blacks market). If everything has gone right you should be general manager around week 16 - 20. When that's done there is nothing much than work, work, work and educate the last things you need. Press F6 to see if you need more education first so you don't do it unecessarily! If you have around 3000$, go to bank and see the broker. Put the money at T-bills if you don't want to take any risk. DONT deposit - you could lose them! Remember also that Wild Willy might rob you when leaving bank/blacks market. That's why I go for the engineering education to not get robbed when I have much cash (because I work at the factory). One other thing you could buy is the freezer - when u have that you could buy 12 weeks of food at one time. Other hints: Look for price changes - when prices go up you might get a raise. Build up cash to at least 400 before week 4 so you can pay the rent immediately. Remember try to plan your turns in advance so you dont spend so much time "walking". This is important! Time is really money in this game. If you are doing the "cash race" in the end, take a relax at apartment once every two weeks so you don't get doctor bills and keep the happiness rate up. Finally, one "cheat".buy some expensive stuff at Z-mart (not Socket City!) like the fridge and stove and go to pawn shop. Pawn those items and redeem them immediately. Now you got around 50-200$ (depending on the value of the items - the more expensive, the better) more! Repeat this to build cash without the time running away! One funny side note on this is that if you do this around 75 times (I got the message when I was around 13 000$) you get a message that says "that you should try a different approach to the game" and the game quits! But you could easily get around 10 000. My record (have only tried it once because it's no "fun") is finished on the 28th week with the score set to a maximum of 400. Good luck!
