Liberty or Death is a turn-based strategy game of historical themes that was released by KOEI in the early nineties as part of a Historical Simulation Series. The game allows the user to lead either the British or Americans in the American Revolutionary War where the United States declared its freedom from the English crown. There are three commanders-in-chiefs on each side from whose point of view the user may play.

Liberty or Death uses a similar engine to many of the company’s other turn-based strategy games, but tailors the commands on the interface to reflect the historical event so the American Revolutionary War. For example, one of the areas of micromanagement involves gaining the support of the public for the government’s actions. In previous games, giving
food to the people or holding a party would do this. In Liberty or Death, these commands have been replaced with “write a gazette” and soldiers area allowed a furlough to improve morale.
The objective is the same, regardless of what side the user chooses to play. Defeat all enemy troops in the colonies and take the lands for your country. Depending on which country the user plays, there are different strategies to accomplish this. The Americans begin with little offensive power and have to rely on defensive tactics as they build their militia into one worthy of facing the red coats. Conversely, the British need to fortify the positions they already hold and wipe out the rebels before they become too powerful to easily contend with. The game play is military strategy, but there are also elements of diplomacy with other factions, as well as the civilians loyal to your cause. The populace will determine the amount of money available for military spending, making them very important. There are also bribes to be offered, troops to train, and resources to be gathered and traded.
The game is historically accurate and faithfully portrays some of the major battlegrounds of the war. It also reflects the goals of both factions and their respective leaders. It is complex and difficult and will not be completed in one afternoon.
