The original “Lords of the Realm 2” is a great game!
Game-playing the original game is divided up into two sections: The strategic map, which is like any map in Civilizations or any other strategy world-conquering game, is where most of the action goes on. Then, when any battle is initiated, such as a siege on a castle or a fight between two armies, another screen pops up where, in real time, the player orders his different units, such as archers, knights, mace men, and so on in formation around the field to beat the opposing army.

Archers, for example, are to be kept out of melee range so they can kill enemy units from a distance, and so on.

Realm 2: Siege Pack only enhances this second part of the game. It basically adds the option to 'skirmish' a melee battle, that is, you can set up a planned fight, having different options for your units as well as the attacking units, and you can choose whether you want to fight on a level field or whether you want to be defending or attacking a castle.
A glaring problem with this game, regardless of the expansion, is that the castle assault and defense sequences are unbalanced. The computer AI can barely defend a castle against a decent sized army, but virtually any castle or keep can be very easily defended by any size attacking army with a full garrison of archers. The player must only place all the archers where they can shoot the attackers, and boom; there is really no chance for any sized army to take a castle owned by the player. The computer, however, usually fills its castles with only 1/3 archers and crossbowmen, and when the player is attacking the archers inside the castle run around like idiots, doing laps inside the castle.
If the AI in the game, especially concerning the siege defense and offense were to be improved, then this expansion would definitely enhance game-play. As it is, though, the battles aren't really the fun part of the game, and a few additions to the strategy part of the game would have been really appreciated. So you should download this game and enjoy it!

Game Review 2 (written by Zei_zao_ls) Added on: 09/18/2006
Lords of the Realm 2 is a charming game mixing some real time strategy game elements and turn based strategy to blend into a somewhat primitive, but ahead of it's time, version of the Total War series. You can actually see how the Total War series could be a tribute of sorts to the game, it's design and creative ideas in strategy gaming surely inspired quite a few game designers at a later date, giving them new ideas and a solid foundation of ideas to create new, better (arguably) games.
LotR2 by itself is an addictive game, fun to play and hard to put down, and still playable years later despite outdated graphics. I originally played this one as a kid, and it was enrapturing, capturing my imagination and quite a bit of time was spent playing this. Now, as a grown man (fully able to be drafted into the military without my consent!) it's still amusing, and the expansion only makes it better, adding new features and units. Unique units provide unique strategies, allow for many ways to conquer your foes and defend your land from the invasions and encroachments of your not-so-friendly fellow conquerors next door.
As you vie for completion of your conquest, acquiring more land and resources to put together an even more unstoppable army, you'll find yourself drawn in to the game-play and left wanting more.
There are downsides, of course, as with any game. Exploits aren't hard to find, and somewhat unbalancing... In battles you can absolutely demolish enemies simply by clicking a lot, if you know how to do it. The sound can get a bit repetitive as well, though it's hardly bad while it's out there. It's not as though it's completely intolerable, and it actually passes as charming at times... if you hadn't heard the song already. A lot of the unit sounds, and advisor sounds, are quite good, though as in most games... they can definitely get a bit repetitive.

This game is excellent. Years have gone by, games have improved so much in regards to graphics and yet I keep on choosing to play Lords of the Realm II over the others.

An excellent game. I have been playing it for a long time. I love the split scenarios and the need to manage the townships and grow food as well. The field battles are very fun. I enjoy being able to command so many troops, the strategic basis of the game is excellent. It is one of the first of its kind, very ahead of its time. It is still a great game even today.

One of the best strategy games I've ever played, still addicting after all these years. I remember after I bought it as a kid, playing it for hours and hours everyday.
