The year is 2014 and the Earth and the entire solar system are both ruled by the Solar Union. Three former colonies have approached the government under the guise of negotiating their former expatriation from the union. Instead,
however, the colonial upstarts capture three mining worlds: Neptune’s moon Triton; Pacifica the water-covered world; and the planet most like Earth, Romulus. With the fear of massive economic instability looming, Earth’s way of life is at stake.
Nectaris is a game of galactic conquest. The user starts with a very small army, usually a few foot soldiers, that are assigned the task of defending the satellite dish that represents the user’s home base. At the beginning, the enemy is also small and weak and will only attack with infantry units similar to your own. However, the enemy will grow and become stronger, and the user must grow as well or perish.
Nectaris features a total of ninety six levels and several campaigns. There are eight special multiplayer maps. There are many units that vary in structure from infantry to submarines, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. Battles are won and lost based on the units’ attack and defensive statistics, troop strength and experience, terrain bonuses and detractors, and the position of supporting units. Units cannot be created by the user, but can be captured from the enemy in combat. To win each map, the enemy’s units must all be decimated, or the user must overtake the enemy’s headquarters.
With the lack of micromanagement, Nectaris is a lightweight turn-based strategy. It is designed for the casual gamer as opposed to the detail freak. Nectaris is a decent game that follows a familiar engine and story line. It features a short learning curve, and can be picked up quickly by even a beginning strategist. It is recommended for an afternoon of stress-free casual play. You’ll be excited and addictive!
