The Perfect General was released by Quantum Quality Productions (QQP) in 1991. It is a turn based war strategy game for two players or one player and a computer controlled force. The game occurs on a board of hexagonal spaces. Each hex has a terrain type that it stands for. Such terrain types are road, grass, city, river, desert, forest, rail, etc. These terrain types affect movement and combat capabilities, especially when random rules are selected. Random rules variate gameplay by using probability to determine the victor in a combat situation.
Battles take place on maps that are either created for specific scenarios or based on actual battlefields. There are ten units that can be purchased and placed at the beginning of each round.
These units are light, medium, and, heavy tanks, armored cars, infantry, bazookas, and engineers, and mobile, light, and heavy artillery. All of these except the artillery units attack by direct combat and must move to a hex that is adjacent to the enemy that they wish to attack in order to do so.
The artillery units can fire from a range, but are limited in movement, as the light and heavy artillery units require the aid of an armored unit to move.
The engineer unit is a unit with extremely low combat capabilities,
but makes up for this with other useful tactics. The engineer is the unit that can lay and sweep mines, which can also be purchased in the setup phase, and construct bridges over rivers to allow movement of armored units and speed the movement of infantry units.
The armored car also has low combat capabilities, but makes up for this with the ability to transport infantry units and its heavy armor.
The infantry unit is best used against other infantry or bazooka units, because of its low firepower and low armor. The bazooka unit is designed for use against light tanks or armored cars.
The big punch unit is the heavy tank. This unit can destroy almost everything it goes against, but it is very slow, and therefore very vulnerable to artillery fire.
The goal of the game is to be victorious by using tactics to defeat all of your enemies’ units. I did enjoy this game and I think that I would enjoy it even now, as many war strategy games still use similar combat configurations (with units and gameplay) as this game does. I recommend this game for any war strategy people and general strategy people. If you are a thinker, this game is likely for you.
