Renegade Legion: Interceptor is the first in a line of computer games that were based on the FASA board and role playing games of the same title. Interceptor is a faithful adaptation of the board game to the DOS platform. It was developed and released by Strategic Simulations, Incorporated (SSI) in the early nineties. It is a strategy and futuristic battle simulation hybrid in the top down perspective.
The game play of Renegade Legion: Interceptor is primarily turn based, with real time sequences during actual combat situations. It is a head to head battle between the Terran Overlord Government and the Non-Human Commonwealth. The user can play as either faction and can play against computer AI, or a carbon-based opponent through hotseat. The user can choose either a single
battle skirmish mode, or a more mission based full-fledged campaign.
The game begins with the user possessing a limited amount of money with which to purchase seven ships and hire seven respective pilots. The game also features a ship generator, which is fun for creating custom spacecraft. The early ships, which were affordable, were also weak and did not perform well in battle, due to weak firepower, poor defenses, or sluggish maneuverability. As the game progressed, ships could be upgraded and more units could be added to the armada. The field of play is a hex based map, similar to the one used in the board game. The user will be given a mission with some briefing as to the history of the conflict. The user must then position his squadron on the appropriate tiles to afford the greatest tactical advantage over his opponent. The most sound tactical maneuver included positioning the strongest ships behind the enemy in an order to blast through their defenses without taking fire.
There are rules of engagement that will be decided according to the class and strength of the ships. Attempting to do too much at once will overload the ship and cause it to take damage. There are rules that control the arc of the ballistae and speed is also a great factor, especially when making turns. With practice, the user will grasp these many game factors and be successful in the tricky real time combat sequences.
In summary, Renegade Legion: Interceptor is a nifty little strategy game in space. It features some exciting space combat sequences and comes recommended for download.
