Published by both Digital Integration and Titus, Rival Realms is an obscure real time strategy game that features advanced AI and a very good challenge for the strategist. It has a wonderful, classic fantasy theme.
The game begins as the user determines at what level he or she would like to play. Rival Realms offers four levels of AI difficulty from which to choose. The game can also be played as a multiplayer game with up to seven friends as adversaries. There are three single-player campaigns to pick from, one representing each of the possible races in the game: elves, green-skins or humans.
If the challenge is not great enough, Rival Realms offers an editor so the user can create his or her own challenges in a custom game.
The game play itself is very detailed and challenging. Each of the rival races has its own strengths and weaknesses, which is to be expected in a balanced game of any merit. The elves are magical creatures with the stereotypical ranged attacks and weak melee damage. They are also technologically superior to the other two races. The green-skinned race are very primitive, but are very strong and make for great brawlers in close combat situations..
Regardless of race, there are fourteen types of units to be built and a dozen different buildings. The greatest part of Rival Realms revolves around
the building of armies. Each army is totally unique. Every unit has its own individual inventory consisting of everything from keys to spells that can be traded with other units. Each unit also has five levels of experience to be gained, making Rival Realms similar to a role playing game. Units can be neatly customized to make specialty units such as thieves and pickpockets, who can steal from anyone and anything, to spell casters who can change the lay of the land before them. A user’s favorite units can be saved and hired in future games, making them more like real soldiers or mercenaries.
