Sea Rogue was a fantastic game, and I would argue it still is. When you are going through a minefield, or when you see a shark while you are diving, your heartbeat quickens, despite the dated graphics. The thrill of identifying a wreck and the rewards for the treasure are great as well.
The ships are cool, but the submarine is the BEST. When this game came out it was among the very few that were realistic and had an original idea.
Oh and I guess more importantly it was a game that was fun. What's more, because the wreck locations were different each time you started over, the game had real replay ability.
While the game leads you to believe that finding the titanic is the coolest thing, it really doesn't compare to the Spanish fleet in terms of profit...assuming you are willing to fight your way in and out of the treasure trove, because you will have to make many, many, trips back there to collect all the goodies.
Why they haven't made a sequel to this yet is beyond me, because you could today incorporate 3-D graphics along with first-person or team based strategies these days and that would only make the game
that much cooler. In fact, you could make it an online world, where you competed against all the other players, trying to either beat them to the wrecks or trying to fight them for the bounty once they did the hard work for you. The possibilities are many.
What else can I say about Sea Rogue, other than just to highlight the reality of it, once you make your first million (if memory serves me well) you are given the option to retire, which is fair enough, because who wouldn't want to retire to you own private island with cabana girls / boys to make life easy for you.
The only flaw is that there wasn't a more varied amount of upgrades / challenges, but that really won't stop you from playing it again and again, or at least it didn't for me.
If I had to choose just one game to play, it would probably be Civilization, but I would still highly recommend this to anyone as it remains in my top ten games ever played. If nothing else, it is hands-down better than spending your time playing crap games like Zuma on MSN, no offence to the makers of Zuma that is.
