The Settlers of Catan is a great strategy game. The details are faithful to the board game of the same title. I highly recommend the board game as well. If you play the board game, this computer version can help you become a better player by allowing you to try out different strategies.
Description of the Game: You and 2 or 3 other players are setters in a new land. You can build roads, settlements, and cities. The board is made up of hexes which represent the five resources of: lumber, brick, sheep, ore, and wheat.
These hexes appear in a different configuration every game. This is neat because you never play the same game twice. The players build roads along the intersections of the hexes. Settlements and Cities may be placed at the intersection of the hexes.
To win the game you need ten victory points. Settlements are worth 1 point, and cities are worth two points. A player with the longest road gets 2 points, and the player with the largest army gets two points.
There is a number on each hex (which also changes every game). Two dice are rolled for each turn. For example: if the dice roll is a 2 and 4 (total 6) then any hexes with a 6 on
it pay one card of that resource (brick, lumber, etc.) to any player who has a settlement or city adjoining that hex. To build a road you need brick and lumber. To build a settlement you need brick, lumber, sheep, and wheat. To build a city you need two wheat and three ore. There are no hexes with the number 7. The number 7 is reserved to activate the “robber”. When a 7 is rolled, that player can place the robber on any hex on the board. While the robber is there, the players with settlements or cities adjoining that hex cannot receive any production from that hex. The player who rolled the 7 can also take a resource card from one player who has a settlement.
Players can also buy a development card for one wheat, one ore, and one sheep. There are a variety of development cards in the deck and you don’t know what card you will get until you buy it. The most common development card is a soldier. The soldier can be used to move the robber to a new location and take a card from another player. The player with the most soldier cards (with a minimum of 3 soldiers) gets 2 points for having the largest army. There are also cards that give 1 victory point, and other cards such as road building which allows the player to place 2 roads for free.
