Game Review 1 (written by Oitinius) Added on: 11/23/2006
This is a game that requires a higher level of problem solving than other space faring games. It presents itself as a hybrid space combat and RPG game. You control a starship that is returning from an isolated world to Earth, and what you encounter there gives you a major problem to solve with no real clues about how to solve it. The path that you take is left up to you, and the alien races you encounter along the way will give you the information you need.
This takes some patience and some reading, and for awhile you will be dedicated to your own survival in a very hostile environment.
The combat in the game is handled from a top down view of the

space field, and is always between two opposing ships with differing abilities. Throughout the game you can build up a fleet, but only one of your ships will ever be fighting at once. It takes awhile to get used to the strengths and weaknesses of the various ships, both in your own use and that of the AI opposing you.
The graphics of this game were very good for the time, and the rich mix of exploration, RPG interactivity, and combat make this one of the best games of its era. You will find some genuinely funny moments with some of the alien races, with the overarching threat of the Ur-Quan lurking in the background. As the game progresses the tone becomes more serious and urgent, leading to some tense moments in the final stages of the game. If you want a game that progressively unfolds with a rich and intriguing story that keeps you on your toes then this will be right up your alley.
There is also a melee mode if you just want to participate in combat in the game. This will let you test out and see the abilities of the various ships, and it is a good mode to use for some quick fun. The main game itself can take a lot of time, much of it spent traveling through hyperspace, and soon you will be looking at your clock and wondering where the hours went. The conversations with the aliens also take up a significant period of time unless you skip through them quickly, and they are completely necessary to the progression of the game, so make sure you can devote yourself to this significantly.
Overall, this is worth any person's time to download and play. It will provide you with hours of fun, has great replay ability, has great graphics for its age, and will not let you down.

Game Review 2 (written by Norsul) Added on: 11/12/2006
Every once in a while a game comes along that is capable of completely captivating your imagination. Some have outstanding graphics; some are based on an innovative premise, while others draw you in to a long and involved storyline. Star Control 2 cannot really lay claim to either of the two former strengths, but for anyone who grew up with Star Wars or Star Trek, the latter will keep you coming back again and again. Even after almost 15 years and multiple playing, I still find myself replaying Star Control 2. While surely part of this can be attributed to nostalgia, the fact is that this game is so well written and put together that it becomes a part of a fan's life. There are countless fan sites out there on the internet that can attest to this phenomenon.
As mentioned before, this game is not what you would call a graphical "tour de force", though the graphics are quite adequate (especially in its day). The sound is ok, about what you might expect from this type of game. There is a large amount of voice acting as all dialogue is spoken. This provides an interesting angle to the game as it contributes to each race having a distinctive identity. Some of the voice acting is top-notch and even moving, while others could have used more work. Overall, the sound and voices are well done, but for those who disagree, there's always the option of turning off the sound and just reading the subtitles.
The premise is that of a space opera/strategy. Those of you who have played the classic Star flight, or something of that ilk, will be familiar with the basic premise and mechanics. Having played the previous installment Star Control will be helpful for play mechanics and background purposes, but by no means is it essential. The basic idea is this: you are a starship captain. It is your job to build up your flagship (and your fleet) to such a degree that you are able to resume the intergalactic struggle against the Ur-Quan and their hierarchy of Battle Thralls. In practice this is much more complicated than it sounds.
You will have to search for and mine lucrative mineral planets, hunt and capture alien species and trade information in order to gain capital and upgrades for your armada. In addition, you will have to be at your most diplomatic in order to persuade various other space-faring cultures to take up your cause. Sometimes, this will be as simple as asking them to join you while other times you will have to engage in a little "quid pro quo" and complete specific requirements before that race will lend you their help (in the forms of their spaceship designs). This is not just a simple seek and destroy mission. If you try to take on the Ur-Quan and their Hierarchy without help and before you're ready, you will surely be pasted. There is also a two-player "melee" mode where you can go head-to-head against the CPU or another player with any of the ships from the game.
In the course of trying to add allies to your cause, you will travel across the entire sector piecing together mysteries both large and small. There are countless ways to play and beat the game (ok, maybe not countless, but there are more than a few) as it is not entirely linear in nature. There are allegiances you can make that will ultimately help your cause, but they are not necessary to the outcome of the game. That means, you can still beat the game without adding EVERY friendly species to your cause. Of course, it is in your interest to do so since some will bring rewards much greater than just an influx of crew or ships. Some can bring additional races along with them or even change the course of the war.
All in all, anyone who has even a passing interest in the Sci-Fi space opera genre (be it video games or TV/movies) would be remiss not to pick up this game.

The controls are very user friendly. And the graphics are good.

The one thing I remember most from this game back in the day was the awesome music, both ambient and also a really funky tune that played when you were cruising between galaxies. I used to turn up my speakers just to hear that!
