Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 01/23/2008
Star Fleet I: The War Begins is a space combat simulation game. The game is big and quite complex and the only way to figure out how to play it is to sink your teeth into it. The game was released in the 80s and features simple graphics and sounds. The graphics is actually just in color ASCIII characters.
As a new cadet from the Starfleet Academy you have been assigned to be the commander of a Starship and because the Federation is currently at war with Krellans and Zaldrons, you will have to lead your Starship into a mission.

As a new cadet from the Starfleet Academy you have been assigned to be the commander of a Starship and because the Federation is currently at war with Krellans and Zaldrons, you will have to lead your Starship into a mission. At the start of each mission you will be given a target and this is the number of enemies that you need

to be able to kill within the specific time frame. As you go farther along in the game, you will need to kill off more enemies at shorter periods of time.
You can navigate your ship manually or automatically. In the automatic navigation, you have to set out a course in the main computer. The main computer is the main display that features a star chart map. It will also tell you what your current position is. There are other information that are available in the navigation equipment. In some missions there will be occurrences such as storms and others that will affect the performance of your ship. When your ship enters a quadrant in the map that has enemy forces in it, you will have to combat these enemy ships. The enemy ships are either from the Krellan or the Zaldron group. A red number on the map indicates a hostile quadrant. You can use your weapons which are mainly Mines and Torpedoes.
It can get hard to combat ships especially when there are many of them. You can destroy the ships in the quadrant or you can also capture them. You can capture the enemy vessels by first disabling them. If you have a hard time defeating the enemies, you have the option of going on self destruct mode. You will survive this mode but it can greatly affect the result of your mission. Each of your missions will be graded at the end and you recommendations for promotions and other advancements will be given.
This game can be boring for those who are used to flashy graphics and gameplay but it is definitely worth downloading especially for those who love classic games

Once you learn the interface, the game plays faster than newer menu driven games. Players progress through increasingly difficult missions, learning to wring the last bit of fight from their cruisers and then limp back to a base to reload.
