Ships in this game consist of a very customizable and detailed
system that allows you to select from 1 of 3 types of cannon, how many cannon you want, what ship hull you want to use, what material it will be made of, the number of masts you want, the type of sails you want, the amount of space dedicated to crew bunks, and even the figurehead you want.
Types of cannon: the long ranged and high power 'cannon', the lighter but still long ranged 'saker', and the short ranged 'culverin'. Each has its bonuses in allowing more weight to be held by your ships while still being capable of combat, or allowing your ships to hit harder and further away.
Types of wood: teak is a cheap but weaker wood that can serve you if you aren't seeking combat, as it is easier to punch a hole in. Mahogany on the other hand is the strongest wood in the game and also the most expensive. There are other choices but the main point is that they provide a choice between cost and effectiveness.
Crew quarters vs. cargo: when you make a ship you choose how much space to dedicate to cargo and how much to crew, each ship has a default amount of space available specific to that hull type.
Ship types: there are 6 types of ships available, depending on how developed the shipyard is. The latin, redonda, bergantin, nao, carrack, galleon, and heavy galleon. Each of these is in order from the largest to the smallest, with the latin and redonda being actually on the same hull, with different attributes. To get a heavy galleon you must invest quite a bit in a developed shipyard. You may have up to 5 ships in your fleet, and you need to recruit a captain for each of them from a bar in a port.
The storyline is completely optional.
