Genre: Strategy    |     Year: 1997    |     Publisher: MicroProse Software    |     Developer: Mythos Games Ltd.
Game Review (written by Ads30) Added on: 08/28/2006
Aah, x-com. Anyone who enjoys these sort of strategy games should force themselves to go back in time and see what these developers had going on, these games are ancient but they still seem to have just as much depth as any new release game of the same type. The graphics, although blocky and extremely old school, have a unique look and should be seen to be appreciated, especially comic book fans.
Gameplay in x-com is intense. Trying to kill those last 2 aliens with your last soldier on half health can be quite nerve racking.
Don’t get me wrong, this game is NOT easy and beginners will more than once have to start over again.
The sound is as you would expect from a game this old, pretty damn dodgy, but we don’t play games for sound, we have music for that, games are for gameplay and that is where x-com has always held the trump card. These guys got it right the first time and pretty much stuck with the same formula for the whole series, why fix it if it isn’t broken.
I still remember the first time I played one of the x-com games, I was so confused that I was just clicking and hoping for the best, don't have to tell you how many

times I had to start over. But confusion aside, this game rocks! Make sure you spend some quality time with x-com, you will get much more out of this game than most on the market, even these days.
Having a bit of an interest in aliens, my opinion may be a little biased, but know this - if you have ever enjoyed playing strategy games, make sure you play one of the x-com games, they have set the standard for all strategy games since their release. DO NOT underestimate how much fun you can have with this game, it is one of the most rewarding games to play and it makes hours seem like seconds. Apart from the turn based explore / fighting you will also have to manage your bases, aircraft, crew members, research new technology, manufacture new items and that is just a very small overview of what goes on. This game is so good it should come free on every hard drive that is made. Don't be fooled by the graphics, this is a very sophisticated game, no doubt about that.

So that’s my opinion of x-com apocalypse, maybe biased, maybe not but I am a gamer from the days of dos and love finding old classics like this, and they are as much fun as they were way back in nineties.

This is the best classic game ever! Never finished it so looking forward to having another go.

Fantastic Dos Game of its time. Keeps you Captivated for hours! great game concept. they could have made the game a bit easier as the aliens have much better accuracy and you die quite alot. save games are very important to get through this series

Maliceman (03/23/2009)
This is definitely one of the better games. This one, in my opinion, was the hardest X-Com, though.

Bfourie (12/30/2008)
Excellent! Back to basics. Gameplay at its most raw form and truly enjoyable. Hoping to see a new addtion to the family soon as per the web link.

A classic gamw which I just started playing again. Don't forget that you can play in real time mode and also play deathmatch against another human.

I loved all the X-Com series. (Terror from the deep especially!). Really great to see this here.

A really cool game that I long to play again. It's most fun when it's still hard, but when you get the waypoint gun then it kinda gets easy.

This is the greatest strategy game I have ever played. I can't believe there haven't been anymore like it since.

Ry0suke (09/16/2008)
Yeah! This is one of the best turn base games I've ever played. Highly addictive. Even after all these years, I'm still drooling to play it all over again.

Cipherlord (08/28/2008)
They need to make more of these. If they did, they probably would sell a lot. Best of the series.

What I love about Xcom is that everything takes time. You can run raids and kill aliens but you still have to wait until your scientists discover that new weapon/armor/ship. Because if this it seems like there is always a short term goal that keeps bringing you back. If you're not careful you'll end up saying "just one more turn" until suddenly you haven't slept and you have to get ready for work in a few hours.

X-Com. What a nostalgic return to my younger days. Apocalypse is a wierder, yet more in-depth X-com volume than the rest. I really enjoyed playing it after school so many years ago. It ranks up there with Diablo, Fallout, Colonization, etc. I highly recommend you try it at least once!

Definitely a must. Now if only I could find a computer that could still run it. Makes me want to dig out a copy of Windows 95!

This game is fantastic and totally addictive! I used to own the cd version but broke them in order to get some work done. It is garanteed to give many hours of satisfaction.

A very wonderful game! It may not be the grand father of strategy games but definitely the father or the uncle of turn-based strategy games!

Vegenick (06/28/2008)
A great game. It is an excellent game. Great for strategy, and a great sucessor to the older versions.

Baddream (05/06/2008)
Just like another strategy game, have high tense of game flow.

An excellent game, with many areas of expansion and game play. The interface is user friendly. My only complaint would be a lack of adequate research time.

This game has always been fun since its first relase.

Great game.

X-Com is one of the greatest gaming series ever! It makes you wonder why they ever stopped making the games if you play one even to this day. While the graphics might be dated by today standards, they hold up well enough and the strategy gameplay is still second to none. I really wish a quality developer would pick this game up and make another one. With today’s graphics engines that are out there on the market, imagine what a new X-Com would look like. Plus we need to kill aliens.

Stuntmangeo (01/30/2008)
Amazing. In all x-com games, the balance between financial and ass-kicking is pretty sweet. An instant classic.

Merry5112 (01/06/2008)
This is one of the best games of all time.

Jon12181 (12/29/2007)
This game is one of the best games I have ever seen. I have played many similar styles, but have found none that comes close. I love how you have to balance finances, politics, expansion, and fighting, all together in one game

Rjmeadth (12/20/2007)
I can remember playing this one years ago. Probably my favourite thing about it was the ability to micro-manage every last one of your men, right down to the combination of various armour on his person. I also liked the way that you were well rewarded for not just pounding aliens into goop, but drugging them and taking them back to your lab for study. On top of all this, the game had so many levels of play: squad combat, research/business management, cruising round town in your little cars. If you like excellent classic engaging sci-fi storylines, then give this one a shot!

This game is an absolute classic, I spent a lot of my exam revision time as a kid playing on this sucker and never got board of it, rock on X-com.

Otaku_hanzo (12/11/2007)
I spent so many hours playing it that I couldn't even begin to fathom just exactly how many. Truly a beautiful classic that really hasn't been equaled to date, in my opinion.

Knutivar (12/07/2007)
This is just great. It is the story that's really pushes this game up and above its competition.
