Originally created as a programming aid, Hacker by Wadesoft is a freeware DOS utility created in 1984 by a Mr. Malachi. I LOVE it! It reminds me of days in elementary school, sitting on that typing computer with the black screen and green font, not really knowing what I was doing, but just typing random things after "C:" just to see what it did! Little did I know that all that would lead me to where I am today!
But anyways, back to the 'game.

But anyways, back to the 'game.' It has absolutely no graphics to speak of, as it is a text-based utility. As I'm sure many of you are aware, it requires a DOS emulator in order to run on a Windows machine. It can be used for many operations, such
as deciphering file formats- mostly WMA & TGA (very groundbreaking at the time!) The 4 basic functions of Hacker are 1) numeric/character search; 2) numeric/character search & replace; 3) numeric/character modification; & 4) file comparison.
Its greatest feature, though, is that it allows one to search for specific strings of characters & alter or just compare them to other strings. For example, let's say you have $500 in a game of Oregon Trail that you have saved to a known location on your hard drive. Simply search for that save file & the "500" string. You can now change that 500 to 100,000 or whatever numbers you wish!
Not recommended for people who don't know what they're doing! This program defies self-explanation! But anyone thinking of downloading this should have at least a basic understanding of simple programming rules & languages. Contrary to not-so-popular belief, this game will not enable you to hack your way into the National Security Agency's database. Or any other agency's for that matter. While at the same time giving one a feel of hacker status, this utility is mostly harmless.
I would recommend Hacker to anyone tired of searching for cheats for games that they could probably beat without cheats. Cheats just make games fun. So, if you want to control every aspect of your gaming experience, from amount of ammunition to the color of your clothes, by all means.
